A Dutch Multicultural Delegation Visiting Egypt

Within the public diplomacy framework of the Netherlands Embassy, a Dutch multicultural delegation was invited for a short visit to Egypt. It aimed at getting the Egyptian public exposed to Holland’s multiculturalism and the position of Muslims in Holland.

During the delegation’s stay in Egypt, two public events were organized in Cairo (at the Arab Open University) and Alexandria (at Bibliotheca Alexandrina) for sharing the Dutch Muslims’ vivid experiences with a huge Egyptian audience of students, researchers and journalists. Five active Egyptian bloggers, who participated in a visitors’ program in Holland last March, had also shared their Dutch experience with Alexandrians. Moreover, the delegation’s program in Egypt included meetings with Egypt’s high-profile religious leaders, such as Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Sheik of Cairo's Al-Azhar University Mosque; and Sheikh Ali Gomaa, the Grand Mufti of Egypt. Many possibilities for future collaboration between the Dutch Muslim community and Al-Azhar or/and Dar al-Ifta were discussed and praised by both parties.  The delegation also met with Egyptian officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Human Rights department, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM)’s family values committee as well as the Alexandria Governor.
